My wife and I are contemplating a dive trip to Cozumel in July 2012. Has
anybody here been there during that time of year? Besides being much hotter
than our trip in December 2011, what else should we be concerned about? I
understand it is during hurricane season, but how big a risk is that? Are
there other things that could close the port or otherwise limit our days of
diving? Only after we got there in December did we hear that the port had
been closed several days in the previous week due to the Norte winds. Any
and all suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks!

I just read your trip report. Glad you had a good time.

We were in Cozumel in June, but I've traveled there twice in July
(2002 and 2004). Yes, it will be significantly hotter. On our
December trip a few years ago, it was very comfortable dining outdoors
at night. This June we tried to stay in air-conditioned indoors as
much as possible.

As long as you're not impacted by a tropical storm or hurricane,
chances of a port closure are actually much lower at that time of the
year. In addition to the December trip, I've also been there twice in
February and once in March and port closures impacted three of those
four trips! Normally, seas are very flat in July, and the water is
very comfortable.

I'd make one suggestion for your next trip since you liked DP's faster
boats. Check out one of the smaller dive ops that provide larger
tanks for longer dives. If you're only making two dives a day, why
not make them 60-70 minutes each? They charge a bit more, but provide
much better service and end up cheaper than the larger ops if you
price per minute of bottom time.

I can't recommend Living Underwater highly enough. Easily one of the
best if not the best dive ops I've ever had the pleasure of diving
with, especially if you dive with Jeremy, the owner. (For
comparison's sake I've also dove Cozumel with Dive Paradise, Aldora,
Blue XTSea, Liquid Blue, Scuba Du, and Caballito del Caribe.)

Since you're on the lee side of the island (in most cases) a brewing
storm more than 2 days or say away shouldn't impact you much in the
way of seas. Post storm, even one that doesn't cause much damage,
will leave chop for several days.

If you get really concerned about the weather, watch carefully. As
long as it doesn't become a "named storm" you can usually buy
insurance. Unless you're on Medicare I don't normally recommend it
for trips like this. If you aren't out any money if a storm blows you
out, don't bother.

(Full disclosure, I'm a travel agent and make money selling insurance
to folks. But there are plenty of places you can buy on your own,
unless you want to help pay for my new dive computer :-)

So Kim Jung Ill shows up at the barbecue. "Wait,"
says Qadaffi, "you don't have any peircings." "If you
starve your people enough they'll be too weak to rebbel."
"You have the same number of holes in your head as when
you were born," says bin Laden. "My compound had radar
and antiacraft misslles." "Your neck," shouted Hussein,
"it's the same length." "I didn't piss on W's father."
"Then what happened?" the three asked. "Damned counterfiet
Lipitor and insulin!"
