BANGKOK, Jan. 30 (UPI) _ A Thai fisherman has been charged with the
murder of a female
Canadian tourist who was stabbed to death after taking a late-night
shower on the Thai resort island
of Samui.
The body of 23-year-old Heather Novak was found Thursday near the shower
room of the
Diamond Head Beach Bungalow resort on Samui Island, 124 miles (200 km)
southeast of Bangkok.
Police say today that Novak, a jewelery sales manager from Toronto, had
taken a shower shortly
after midnight and was wearing only a towel when she was attacked and
stabbed repeatedly.
They said they arrested a local fisherman, 28-year-old Amnuay Thanomjit,
who later confessed to
the murder.
The suspect appeared in court today in the town of Rayong, which is on
the mainland opposite
Samui Island.
Amnuay reportedly denied raping Novak but police say they will carry out
forensic tests before they
know whether the woman was raped.
Two of the victim's friends, both young Canadian women, had been staying
with her on the resort
island. They both gave statements at the court hearing in Rayong.
Police say Amnuay confessed to watching Novak while she was sunbathing
and spying on her while
she showered that night.
He reportedly stabbed her after she resisted his advances when she came
out of the shower.
Thai Interior Minister Sanan Kachornprasart expressed regret over the
murder and vowed to
improve security for tourists.
